About SeaweedSeaweeds are marine algae growing on the shores of our beautiful coastlines, mostly underwater but not always. Cold water and tidal actions result in large concentrations of species, of which there are thousands - but only a handful of these are prime edible varieties. Humans have been using seaweed for food, medicine and fertilizers for thousands of years. We often think of seaweed (specifically, Nori) being used in sushi wraps! However, the peoples of Ireland, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Chilé and North America have been consuming seaweed for millenia. Seaweeds have been traded extensively throughout the ages, playing an early and ongoing role in the global economy. We are extremely fortunate to have one of the largest concentrations of edible seaweed varieties right here on the Mendocino Coast of Northern California! Our clean air and cold water make this a real treasure that must be both respected and protected. There are three main groupings of seaweed by color: green, brown and red algae. . . . . Health BenefitsSeaweeds have been used around the world for thousands of years to prevent and cure diseases. Research of seaweed extracts is currently underway, in regards to it's effects on cancer, AIDS and diabetes, in addition to numerous other medical ailments. Donna's personal belief is that our focus should be on that of prevention, as opposed to treatment. Unfortunately, disasterous levels of radiation are still pouring out of Chernobyl. Every time it rains from the northern polar jet stream, Washington, Oregon and California all get a little dose... Kombu in particular has high concentrations of Iodine 127, which pulls radiation and other heavy metals out of the human body. Kombu also works with the pancreas to break down lipids. Both Kombu and Nori can aid in digestion and colon cleansing. Only 3-5 grams of these seaweed varieties DAILY can massively aid the detoxification processes of the body. Bladderwrack and Bull Kelp are high in good phytoestrogens, which promote healthy breast tissue! All of the prime edible seaweeds are higher in vitamins and trace minerals than any land vegetable, including Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, Niacin, Potassium, Magnesium and Calcium.
